Kaiko Moti was born in Bombay, India in 1921. As a young man, he attended the Bombay School of Fine Arts for five years. His passion for painting was undaunted in spite of his father’s wish for him to work at a profession to earn a living. Unrelenting in his pursuit of art, Moti received a scholarship from University College and his family agreed for him to venture abroad to London, where he studied sculpture under Henry Moore. He visited London’s museums and was drawn to the work of Turner. He was dazzled by Turner’s expert use of color and treatment of light.

In 1950 Moti moved to Paris, where he studied sculpture under Ossip Zadkine. Lack of space in Paris was a challenge to Moti, so he turned from sculpture to printmaking. He studied at Atelier 17 with Stanley Hayter.

Noted for his ephemeral aquatints, Moti also taught at the University of Wisconsin.

For a Zoroastrian, light is the infinite source and for Moti it was the centerpiece of all he created. In each of his landscapes, seascapes, animal subjects and florals, the light source is the key that opens the door to understanding the artist’s intention. Moti’s work has been shown all over the world, most notably the Biennale in Venice, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the New York Public Library and the New Delhi Museum of Art. His work can be found in public and private collections including Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the French National Museum of Modern Art and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
