Gabriel Godard, a self-taught painter, was born in 1933 in Delouze, France. His canvases give the pleasure of freshness by their tones and simplicity of construction. He accepts freely the co-existence of the figurative and of the abstract. The very special characteristic of his composition is the relationship between form and shape, and the interplay of activity and color. His figure paintings disclose his unique manner of breaking the silhouette. What counts more is not the figure but its position in space. His landscapes with their broad sweeping lines and areas of sudden notes of color reinforce, further, his perception of light and space and of nature. His paintings are a contemporary evocation of the best of traditional painting rephrased in Godard’s own fresh language. Each canvas is an expression of his pictorial musicality.
“I am like a sponge, I draw one’s inspiration from the things that happen to me, that come to me.”
